Motorola Surfboard SB6120 and SB6121 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem | Motorola Surfboard SB5101 DOCSIS 2.0 cable modems are so popular for delivering high speed cable broadband internet services to the subscriber’s premises. When many Cable services upgrade their infrastructure to support DOCSIS 3.0 or EuroDOCSIS 3.0, Motorola introduces Surfboard SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem and the newest one is Surfboard SB6121 DOSIS 3.0 cable modem.
DOCSIS 3.0 technology was introduced to the market to support the demand of future IP addressing IPv6. DOCSIS 3.0 technology infrastructure increases the transmission speed both upstream and downstream but still backward compatible with DOCSIS 2.0. The DOCSIS 3.0 standard for Europe is different which is under EuroDOCSIS 3.0. Surfboard SB6120 modems are based on DOCSIS 3.0 technology.
Surfboard SB6120 / SB6121 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems enable channel bonding of up to 4 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels to allow you experience the advanced multimedia with data rates of well over 100 Mbps in each direction. The modem is compatible with mostly all the operating systems including Windows®, Macintosh® and UNIX®.
Surfboard SB6120 / Sb6121 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems include a 10/100/1000Base-T Gigabit Port for incredible wired network speeds when connecting to any Gigabit wireless routers in homes or in small business offices. Many wireless routers today are equipped with Gigabit WAN and LAN Ethernet ports that can take benefit of this cable modem.
Surfboard SB5101 DOCSIS 2.0, SB6120 / Sb6121 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems are modem-only devices and do not include the routing function. Therefore you need to connect these modems to the wired or wireless routers in order to share the broadband internet connection with multiple computers in homes. Any home wireless routers can be compatible with these Surfboard cable modems. To provide optimum data rate throughput between the modem and the router, you should choose wireless gigabit router – wireless routers with gigabit WAN port, because the Surfboard SB6120 and SB6121 include one Gigabit Ethernet port. Most new high speed routers would be better for examples:
- Netgear N750 Wndr4000 wireless dual band gigabit router
- Netgear N900 Wndr4500 wireless dual band gigabit router
- Linksys E4200 N750 dual band gigabit router
Many people make mistakes in connecting these modems to the wireless access point in order to share the Internet and create the wireless network. The wireless access points do not have the NAT function to translate the public IP address to the private IP address and vice versa. To share the internet connection, you need a wireless router to connect to the modem. See also: wireless access point Vs wireless router.
The Surfboard SB6121 is enhanced with 1GHz tuner downstream input to increase the frequency spectrum for demanding bandwidth such as commercial services, interactive gaming and IPTV.
The following figure shows the networking diagram for home networks using SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem and the Linksys E4200 wireless router. Connect the WAN port of the router to the RJ-45 Ethernet port of the modem using the included network cable. You can enjoy the high-speed network with DOCSIS 3.0 modem connecting to the gigabit wireless N router. Enjoy the high-speed online gaming experience and jitter free video streaming with DOCSIS 3.0 modem. Use multiple port Linksys WES610N wireless bridging for connecting home theater devices including HDTV, Blu-Ray and XBOX.
Motorola also introduces DOCSIS 3.0 Cable modem with wireless router: SBG6850 – a single solution for high-performance wireless network in home.
